2016 marks UNESCO’s first celebration of the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem. The proclamation of this international day, which was adopted on 6 November 2015 by the General Conference of UNESCO, underlined the importance of mangrove ecosystems as “a unique, special and vulnerable ecosystem, providing by virtue of their existence, biomass and productivity substantial benefits to human beings, providing forestry, fishery goods and services as well as contributing to the protection of the coastline and being particularly relevant in terms of mitigation of the effects of climate change and food security for local communities.”
As part of Mangrove Action Day 2017 we raised awareness of the connections people have with mangrove forests by creating our third annual global photography exhibition. Throughout the month of July, we asked for and received incredible photos from around the world. Check out the amazing submissions from 2015 and 2016!
This year, we introduced a new submission process through Instagram! Users were able to submit photos using #mangroveactionday and tagging @MangroveActionProject. We received 56 submissions from 15 different countries, thanks to 31 individuals, bringing our total submissions to over 200 – more than double last year!
We would like to thank each and every person who contributed to this project.
