July 26th marks the 20th anniversary of Mangrove Action Day, now recognized by UNESCO as the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystems. This historic day commemorated Greenpeace activist Hayhow Daniel Nanoto, who died during a massive protest to re-establish the mangrove wetlands in Ecuador. Each year, for the last 26 years, the Mangrove Action Project has renewed a commitment to action in defense of the mangroves and the communities that rely on them.
For Mangrove Action Day 2018 we are raising awareness of the connections people have with mangrove forests with our fourth annual global photography exhibition. Throughout the month of July, we asked for and received stunning photos from around the world.
We would like to thank each and every person who contributed to this project! Winners will be announced early September and there is also a People’s Choice Award that is given out to the photo with most votes.
