Mangroves are finally gaining more recognition for their importance for the health of our planet. They are being recognized for their vital role in combating climate change, stopping coastal erosion, protecting coastal communities from winds and storm surges, and as nurseries for a myriad of ocean life. There’s so much mangroves do and so much we need to do. Here’s what Mangrove Action Project’s “to-do” list looks like:

  • Continue to support MAP’s Mangrove Education Curriculum introduction into more “mangrove nations”-- What better way to effectively ensure a healthy future for our planet’s mangroves then by positively influencing the next generations of decision makers on the importance of these coastal wetlands and the urgency in halting their further decline? MAP’s Mangrove Curriculum offers that assurance by planting and nourishing the seeds of mangrove conservation in the minds of the children! MAP’s Mangrove Curriculum has already been introduced into eight countries worldwide from Honduras to Brazil, and next year sees its application in China, Belize and the Dutch Antilles.

  • Further the acceptance and adoption of Ecological Mangrove Restoration (EMR) around the globe— EMR is the best way to ensure that long-term, biodiverse mangrove restoration occurs. MAP will implement more Mangrove Conservation and Restoration Projects in Asia, Latin Americaand Africa, starting with an EMR Training workshop in Cambodia. Plans are already underway for a restoration project in El Salvadorfor early next year. Over the next three years, other EMR projects are in the hopper for India, Bangladesh, Thailand, Hondurasand Nicaragua.

  • Continue Developing Plans to implement Phase 2 of MAP’s “In the Hands of the Fishers” (IHOF) Workshops — MAP continues to prioritize work with local communities and indigenous peoples in implementing Community-Based Coastal Resource Management (CBCRM) and searching for suitable alternative development options to help alleviate poverty and enhance the management skills of coastal communities to better conserve and utilize their resources into the future.
  • Strengthen and Expand MAP’s “Question Your Shrimp” Campaign—MAP is continuing to expand our “Question Your Shrimp” Consumer/ Markets Campaign, signing up more chefs” and retail outlets and gathering more citizen signatures on our pledges to not buy or sell imported shrimp because of the heavy environmental and social costs that taint the farmed shrimp industry worldwide. MAP’s Seattle-based campaign is expanding its outreach to other West Coast cities in Washington, Oregonand California. Our hope is to reduce consumer demand for unsustainable seafood sources, thereby reducing the related destruction of mangrove wetlands caused by shrimp farm encroachments along the coasts in the Global South.

  • Further Expand the Influence and Reach of MAP’s Global Network—MAP’s network includes members in over 60 nations, including over 500 NGOs and over 350 scientists, as well as thousands of concerned individuals. Our MAP News is read by thousands around the world, and we must continue to do further outreach to encourage joint actions and unify the many regional networks from Asia, Africa, the Americas, the Caribbean, Oceania, and Europe.

All this work is happening because of the support from people like you.Financial support helps Mangrove Action Project continue to work at the cutting edge of mangrove conservation. With your help, MAP is raising world public awareness about the importance of mangrove wetlands. There is an urgent need to protect and restore these rainforests by the sea, which MAP has been doing for the last 20 years, while involving local communities in the process. You are making a difference!
