Washington State Residents - Help Halt Fish Farming in Our Coastal Waters
The last thing you want to see when I'm relaxing at the beach is a huge factory fish farm polluting our coastal waters. But that just might happen if our legislators don't speak up soon. There is a bill in Congress that will stop the expansion of factory fish farming. Unfortunately, your legislator, Rep. Jim McDermott, hasn't signed on yet.
Factory fish farming isn't just a problem for the environment - it's also a problem for consumers and local businesses. Low-quality farmed fish can undercut the prices of local fishermen's wild products, and it could result in a flood of cheap fish in the market. This industry could put fishermen out of business and leave coastal communities in peril. Moreover, fish that are mass-produced in compact cages in the open ocean frequently require antibiotics to control disease outbreaks and hormone applications to regulate growth in unnatural living conditions. These chemicals flow freely through ocean cages, and residues may end up in fillets of farmed fish on supermarket shelves.
Speak out to protect consumers from factory farmed fish:
