The US retail giant, Costco, recently sent its seafood buyers to both Vietnam and Thailand to inspect the shrimp processing plants there to ensure they met the company's standards. Costco was concerned that none of the shrimp it purchases has been treated with the chemical tripolyphosphate, which is often used to keep seafood moist. Costco is buying white shrimp from Thailand and tiger shrimp from Vietnam, purchasing the bulk of its shrimp from producers in these two nations.
