SER2011 is a multi-disciplinary international conference designed to bring together those individuals and organizations involved in the science and practice of ecological restoration as it relates to natural resource management, climate change, biodiversity loss, and sustainable livelihoods. Delegates include practitioners, researchers, planners/managers, students and volunteers with backgrounds in earth sciences, landscape architecture, ecological engineering, natural resource management, public policy, economics, indigenous cultures and community-based activities. SER2011 will foster a dynamic exchange of knowledge and experiences among this diverse group with the ultimate aim identifying practical solutions for restoring nature and enhancing critical ecosystem goods and services.

Worldwide, mangroves are disappearing at an alarming rate. These vital coastal wetlands serve multi-purposes of great ecological and societal importance, yet are threatened with extinction if current rates of loss continue. The 1% loss rate signifies around 150,000 ha of mangrove forest lost per year. Attempts at restoration have by and large been abysmal failures, wasting both money and human resources in fruitless efforts to replant or more often afforest mangroves. Since the tsunami of December 26th, 2004, the interest in restoring mangroves has increased multi-fold, but again with poor results overall.
It’s time to break the silence on the failures and highlight those more successful techniques that can serve as working models to inform future attempts at mangrove restoration. Four case studies of mangrove restoration will be offered via a panel of experienced ER practitioners. Those attending will have opportunity to compare approaches for commonalities and differences, and also to better assess which approaches seem more effective over both the short and long term.
Such a session will prove valuable in not only sharing ideas, but also helping to formulate more effective future methodology, learning from one another as to the experiences in the field and sharing these with those most likely to benefit from this cross referencing of ER methods. This session will offer a chance to actively compare notes and defend approaches before a learned audience of fellow ER practitioners. The session will encourage important information sharing, as well as some interesting debate and lively discussion.
