The Drying of the Tana Delta, Kenya
KENYA - In August 2007, the Tana River changed its course due to massive siltation caused by high soil erosion from the Tana River catchments, write Geoffrey M. Riungu and Joan Otengo from Kenya (Africa). The situation was worsened by the tremendous reduction of water in the river due to reduced water in tributaries and high evaporation rates as global temperatures rise.   Read More

BFAR Goes on Mangrove Reforestation

PHILIPPINES - Mangrove planting activities in the municipalities of Claveria and Buguey in Cagayan province have been initiated by fishery officials. At least 600 mangrove propagules were planted in both municipalities, in addition to 300 seedlings earlier planted in Bagabag, Nueva Vizcaya, regional director Jovita Ayson of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said.   Read More

Arrests Fail to Slow Theft of Phuket Forest Land

THAILAND - Phuket’s native forests are shrinking fast because of encroachment and officials fear that even the arrests of 10 trespassers will not stop the stealing. Worst case of all is the Bang Kanun forest, where officials say 500 rai of parkland has now been reduced to 300 rai by land poachers.   Read More
