Ecuador’s Galápagos Mangroves in Danger Despite Conservation Efforts
ECUADOR – The mangroves of the Galápagos Islands, once among the world’s best-kept marine reserves, are now under imminent threat. The story of the Galápagos mangroves reminds us of the delicate balance between nature and humanity. This is a critical reminder. As these ecosystems face mounting threats, their survival depends on collective action rooted in respect for the natural world and its irreplaceable wonders.
Sri Lankan fisherman leads charge on climate action
SRI-LANKA – Realizing the importance of conserving this combined ecosystem from human activities like building houses and holiday resorts, Joseph Anton has been leading groups of fishermen to grow mangroves along the banks of Negombo Lagoon.
Climate Advocacy Group Launches Mangrove Restoration Project
LIBERIA – The Liberia Rural Women Organization for Climate Action (LiRWOCA) officially launched the Promoting Mangrove Restoration in Degraded Sites along the Mesurado Wetland project. This key initiative is focused on enhancing environmental sustainability, restoring vital mangrove ecosystems, and promoting community resilience in Liberia.
Tamavua-i-Wai community unites to restore marine ecosystem with 13,000 mangrove seedlings
FIJI – Residents of Tamavua-i-Wai, Fiji Roads Authority, JICA and the Ministry of Forestry have collaborated on the replanting of mangroves along the seashore at Tamavua-i-Wai. The project is in relation to the construction of the Tamavua-i-Wai bridge.
Centre allocates funds Rs 27 cr for Bhitarkanika National Park’s Mangrove restoration & wildlife protection
INDIA – As part of the Enhancing Climate Resilience of India’s Coastal Communities (ECRICC) project, 60% of the funds will be used for mangrove restoration and plantation. Balance of the funds will be allocated for developing wildlife habitats and conserving mangroves.
Coastal Management Failures Unveil Dangerous Encroachments
INDIA – Mumbai’s coastal zones, essential for maintaining ecological balance, have been left unprotected due to regulatory inefficiencies. The Coastal Regulation Zone guidelines were designed to safeguard such fragile ecosystems, but their inadequate implementation has rendered them ineffective in countering the pressures of urban expansion.
Sibugay, Del Carmen wetlands named Ramsar sites
PHILIPPINES – Sibugay Wetland Nature Reserve (SWNR) and the Del Carmen Mangrove Reserve (DCMR) in Siargao Island Protected Landscape and Seascape have been designated as Wetlands of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, making them the 9th and 10th Ramsar sites in the Philippines.
