Powerful Winning Images From the 2024 Mangrove Photography Awards

GLOBAL – With a record-breaking 2,500 submissions from 74 countries, this year’s contest showcased the beauty and global significance of mangrove ecosystems worldwide. Winners include a look at local rituals, the intense colors of decomposing mangroves, and wildlife that call them home. These images, spread across seven categories, show the people and animals that rely on mangrove forests, the threats they face, and why urgent action is needed to protect them. in the category of “Mangroves & Threats” winning photogtrapher Dipayan Bose frames a villager standing inside his half-submerged home during a flood. Due to repeated tropical cyclones and sea level rise in the Bay of Bengal, river embankments have become broken by high tides in coastal villages across the Sundarbans, West Bengal. As a result, homes and farms have flooded, fisheries have become destroyed by seawater, and people have been forced to migrate, victims of climate change.

Sri Lanka’s COYLE to support green entrepreneurs in mangrove restoration

SRI LANKA – Sri Lanka’s Chamber of Young Lankan Entrepreneurs said it is supporting green entrepreneurship linked to mangrove restoration as the island was selected as one of seven nations to be included in a UN flagship project. The Green Entrepreneurship for Mangroves initiative aims to bring together local communities, businesses, and research institutions to coordinate mangrove restoration efforts.

Mangroves are healthier when allowed to grow naturally, research shows

USA – Letting mangroves grow naturally is key, Suncoast Waterkeeper said after conducting new surveys. Suncoast Waterkeeper recently completed mapping surveys of several mangrove sites around Manatee County to better understand the impacts of trimming mangroves versus letting the trees grow naturally.

Mangroves along TN coast to be mapped using geospatial tech, AI

INDIA – Mangroves along the coast of Tamil Nadu will be mapped using geospatial technology and artificial intelligence (Geo-AI), in a collaborative effort by MS Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) and Microsoft. The project, Geo-AI Blue Carbon Programme of MSSRF, was launched by Information Technology and Digital Services Minister Palanivel Thaiga Rajan
