Seth Pillay is making waves in the global environmental movement. His stunning artwork, selected for the Mangrove Action Project’s 23rd Annual Art Contest, has not only earned international recognition but has also appointed him as a Global Earth Ambassador for South Africa. Mangrove Action Project salutes Seth for his accomplishment and looks forward to his continuing efforts to help create a better tomorrow for our planet. Congratulations Seth! Well done!

NIGERIA – Damilola Oduolowu, has been awarded a prestigious Pulitzer Centre grant to investigate the escalating destruction of mangroves in Lagos State. The project seeks to raise awareness about an environmental crisis that has been largely ignored despite its far-reaching consequences on the state.
How a holistic approach aims to heal mangroves in Guinea-Bissau
GUINEA-BISSAU – Mangrove forests still line most of Guinea-Bissau’s fringing shoreline along West Africa’s Atlantic coast. Communities cultivate rice in brackish soils of the mangrove swamps, using a method unique to West Africa.
Bulk Carrier Oil Spill Off Mauritius Still Contaminating Mangroves After 3 Years
MAURITIUS – It’s been three years since the Japanese bulk carrier MV Wakashio ran aground off the coast of Mauritius. A new study led by Curtin University has confirmed that the oil is still contaminating the mangrove forests in the area.
Global distribution and decline of mangrove coastal protection extends far beyond area loss
GLOBAL – Mangroves may offer economic, socially beneficial, environmentally friendly, and sustainable coastal protection, compared to engineered coastal defense structures. However, questions still remain on how the degree of protection varies with intrinsic structural and health properties of mangroves, how they should be quantified, and how their distributions have changed across space and time.

PHILIPPINES – The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) and Department of Natural Resources (DENR) collaborated on the monitoring of mangroves using AI on satellite images to identify mangrove forests around the Philippines. They are looking for volunteers to validate and ensure the accuracy.
