Lessons from successful mangrove forest restoration in El Salvador
EL SALVADOR – Though there are a great number of mangrove restoration projects out there, there is still a 70% or more failure rate, which cannot be ignored. There is a great need today to raise awareness among those attempting mangrove restoration — and those funders who seek to support the same — that there must be a change in emphasis, from numbers of mangrove trees planted to numbers that survive. What follows is a case where local communities and their supporting local NGOs have successfully undertaken such an approach.

GLOBAL – Every year World Wetlands Day reminds us of the critical role wetlands play in sustaining biodiversity. Mangrove forests are one such unique wetland ecosystem often found where land and sea meet.

GLOBAL – Protecting and restoring peatlands and mangroves can strengthen Southeast Asian countries’ efforts to combat climate change, according to new findings from an international team of researchers.

Gujarat’s Guneri Village: First Biodiversity Heritage Site
INDIA – In a landmark decision to conserve unique ecosystems, the Gujarat government has officially declared the inland mangrove in Guneri village, located in Kutch district, as the state’s first Biodiversity Heritage Site (BHS).

Stakeholders Demand Immediate Actions to Restore, Conserve Mangroves
NIGERIA – The National Council on Climate Change secretariate (NCCC), and Environment Stakeholders in the Niger Delta Region have brainstormed, and urged that immediate be taken towards ensuring sustainable mangrove conservation and protection in Nigeria.

Foresters take up mangrove restoration work
INDIA – The National Green Tribunal on protection and conservation of wetlands and especially the mangrove forests, the forest department took up the initiative despite resistance from several quarters.

Environmental group sold its land to billionaire
USA – One of the largest remaining tangles of undisturbed mangrove swamp on the island of Palm Beach was sold to billionaire Thomas Peterffy last year by a branch of the Audubon Society.
