From Theory to Practice: Enhancing Restoration through CBEMR

What we did
The Global Mangrove Alliance’s Indonesia National Chapter (GMA-Indonesia) was established in 2022 to foster collaboration and promote a unified approach to mangrove protection and restoration across Indonesia. In support of their restoration goals, GMA-Indonesia partnered with MAP to deliver comprehensive training on Community-Based Ecological Mangrove Restoration (CBEMR).
Held over eight days on Bengkalis Island, the workshop brought together 38 participants, including local community members, academics, businesses, NGOs, and government staff. The training equipped them with both practical restoration techniques and ecological knowledge.
Through a series of site visits, participants gained hands-on experience in assessing restoration site suitability. Working in teams, they conducted field assessments in Teluk Pambang village’s mangroves, where they observed site features, collected environmental data, mapped the site, and considered the social aspects. This approach allowed them to analyse mangrove degradation and design tailored restoration strategies and monitoring plans suited to local conditions.
Presentations by multiple organisations working on mangrove restoration across Indonesia offered invaluable insights, allowing participants to learn from both restoration successes and challenges while networking with other restoration practitioners.
After this training I will go back to look at the hydrology of the mangrove area and improve mangrove monitoring with the help of local community groups.
I will apply the knowledge from this workshop and arrange scheme that will be used at the local level for mangrove restoration.
I will transition from conventional mangrove rehabilitation activities to Community-Based Ecological Mangrove Restoration (CBEMR)
