New research links mass Maldives mangrove die-offs to climate change
MALDIVES – The collapse of mangrove forests in the Maldives foreshadows a grim future for coastal ecosystems across the globe, experts have warned following the release of new research into the mass deaths. Incidents of mangrove dieback – plants dying from the tip downwards – during 2020 and 2021 could be attributed to climate change and rising sea levels, according to the results of a study published last week in Springer Nature, a leading peer-reviewed journal.


Colombia’s women clam collectors protect Pacific mangroves and mollusks
COLUMBIA – Piangüa, which is found roughly between the Pacific coasts of Mexico and Peru, provides an income for more than 11,000 women in Colombia’s Pacific region. The Afro-Colombian communities scattered around Bahía Málaga, which is home to nearly 1,400 plant and animal species, call it their “black gold.”

Reviving Navghar: A Community’s Fight for Mangrove Restoration
INDIA – In 2021, Navghar became a beacon of hope as the project established a Mangrove Co-Management Committee. This committee, composed of village members, the Gram Panchayat, and women’s Self-Help Groups (SHGs), was tasked with two primary goals: protecting the mangroves and revitalizing local livelihoods.

GLOBAL – A recent study performed 216,000 numerical model runs informed by realistic conditions to quantify confidence in wave reduction capacity of mangroves for wind and swell waves.
