Strengthening Connections for Conservation in Puerto Rico
PUERTO RICO – Recently, MAP’s Alfredo Quarto and Monica Gutierrez-Quarto traveled to Puerto Rico to explore opportunities for collaboration on mangrove conservation, education, and restoration. The trip allowed them to meet with inspiring individuals and organizations working across the island to protect coastal ecosystems and highlighted opportunities to share MAP’s Community-Based Ecological Mangrove Restoration (CBEMR) approach and educational programs.

GLOBAL – Celebrate 25 Years of Mangrove Art! Educating youth about the significance of mangrove and coastal ecosystems is crucial for instigating long-term change. Through this contest, MAP aims to cultivate a lifelong appreciation and respect for the environment in the next generation of decision-makers.
MMPH Founder Awarded in Singapore for Mangrove Conservation Efforts in the Philippines
PHILIPPINES – Matthew Vincent Tabilog (Tabby), Founder of Mangrove Matters PH, was one of the 8 recipients in Asia-Pacific of the prestigious Sustainability Leadership Youth A-List Awards of Eco-Business at the Capitol Theatre in Singapore in May 30, 2025 for his youth-led initiatives on mangrove conservation in the Philippines through research, science communication, educational discussions, youth and community engagement, policy-lobbying, and mangrove reforestation.
The gradual return of ecosystem goods and services following large-scale mangrove restoration
NIGERIA – Nigeria has started the world’s most extensive restoration of oil-degraded mangroves covering over 3000 ha in Ogoniland. This significant project in the Gulf of Guinea is implemented by the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP).

PANAMA – In Panama, the previous government approved a license to build the Baru Port. The proposed port threatens a mangrove ecosystem that contains a quarter of Panama’s mangroves, called the Mangroves of David.
By Increasing Mangrove Protections Now, Coastal Countries Can Help People and Nature
GLOBAL – The Mangrove Breakthrough—a global call to action to protect and restore mangroves and to finance that action—urges governments and nonstate actors to reverse the decline of these vital ecosystems. Revised NDCs are due to the U.N. in September, and to help countries include mangroves in those plans, the Mangrove Breakthrough NDC Task Force, co-led by The Pew Charitable Trusts, has developed four new policy briefs that provide concise and practical guidance.
Guinea-Bissau’s grassroots efforts offer a blueprint for global mangrove restoration
GUINEA-BISSAU – A grassroots revolution is underway, spearheaded by national organizations, international partners and communities to restore mangrove landscapes in Guinea-Bissau. Grassroots organizations are taking center stage in the restoration of mangroves.
